DEPARTMENTAL ACTIVITIES 2009-2010

1.  Department of Malayalam

• During the year the department conducted “T.V.Kochubava commemoration programme” on 23^rd December 2009.  The fampus short story writer Thomas Neelarmadom  gave a talk on the  “works of Kochubava”.  Students also participated.
• Since the syllabus of UG of the university has been revised the department proposes to conduct a seminar on “Language and Journalism” in December 2010.

2.  Department of Economics

• The major work undertaken by the department during the year was the socio-economic survey among the residents of Nattika Gramapanchayath.  On the basis of the survey the department aims at providing proposals for income generating self-employment schemes to the poor and needy.  The programme will be completed during the year 2010-11.

3.  Department of Mathematics

• The teachers and students of the department actively participated in the socio-economic survey conducted in Nattika Gramapanchayath.  Based on the survey the department intends to provide computer literacy to all and work for the same is proceeding.

4.  Department of Physics

• The students of the department participated in the panchayath level socio-economic survey.  It is intended to provide information about the use of non-conventional energy, with the help of ANERT to the residents of the panchayath. The work is going on.

5.  Department of Chemistry

• With the objective of reducing electricity charge the department installed a rain water harvesting system in the B.Sc Chemistry lab with the help of PTA.  The rain water collected is of lab. grade purity which is also used by other departments for their use. Remedial coaching for newly admitted students and study tour to final B.Sc students were also conducted.

6.  Department of Botany

• As a part of extension activities, a survey was conducted by second year B.Sc students in ward 8 of Nattika Grama Panchayath.  The survey aimed at assessing the interest of the residents in developing and maintaining Kitchen Garden in their own premises. A questionnaire was distributed in 150 families and the feed back obtained in order to select the eligible families for the purpose.  15 families were selected.  Vegetable seeds were purchased from Agricultural University, Vellanikkara and supplied to the 15 families.  Our students gave instructions and manual help for starting kitchen garden.

7.  Department of Zoology

• The students of the department participated in the socio- economic survey conducted in Nattika Grama Panchayath.  On the basis of the survey work is going on to provide necessary help for fish farming in own wells and ponds of residents of the panchayath.

8.  Department of Commerce

• The major activity of the department during the year was participation in the socio-economic survey conducted in Nattika Grama Panchayath.  The result of the survey is being analysed and steps are taken for the inclusion of those persons who are not coming under the facility of banking.  22 families have already been identified and preliminary steps were taken for their inclusion.
• Two talks were conducted explaining the job opportunities existing for commerce graduates.
• In the coming year it is proposed to conduct a monthly talk programme with invited guests on various topics related to Commerce and Management.

9. Department of English

• Started publishing a monthly journal EOS – English Off the Shelf . The Journal is      uploaded on the College Website.
• Equipped a team of students to compeer the various events of the college.

• Classes were conducted on Soft-skill development.
• Coaching classes were given to final Year students in English Language for Competitive Examinations.
• Three talks were conducted on English Language, Literature and Cinema.
• Film adaptations of Shakespearean Plays were screened for the Second Year Students.
• Dr. Binda Vasudevan was the subject expert for the interview of Public Service Commission for High School Teachers.
• Dr. P.S. Jaya made a 5-minute short film “Out of the Coverage Area”, which won the  Second Prize in All Kerala Campus Short Film Competition.

Action Plan

• Formation of English Club to co-ordinate and channelise various activities of the Dept.
• “Spell Me” – Spelling Test at three levels.
• Extention Activities based on the Socio-economic Survey conducted by the College.
• Set up a Ready Reference Library in the Dept.
• Screening of Classic Films
• Institute an award for the the student who excels in English Language Efficiency.

10. Department of Physical Education:

• The college cricket team participated in the D-Zone championship held at Vidya Academy, Thrissur.
• The college Base Ball team participated in the interzone championship held at Calicut University Stadium and won fourth place and got seeding for the coming year championship.
• The college athletic team participated in the Interzone athletic meet held at St. Joseph’s College, Devagiri, Calicut.
• The college Soft Ball team participated in the Interzone championship held at Calicut   University Stadium and won one medal.
• The college Kalarippayattu team participated in the Interzone championship held at      S.H College, Chalakkudy and won third place.  Surya.M.S got five gold and two      silver medals.  Prayag got two silver medals.
• The college Volleyball team (men) won third place in D-Zone volleyball championship held at Farook College, Calicut and got third place.
• The college Archery team participated in the Zonal competition held at Carmel   College, Mala.  The members were Rebin Raj and Sarath of third B.Sc Physics.
• Our college best physic team won two gold medals out of a total of eight in the   University.  Shinil.V.M got gold medal in the 85 kg. class and Shijoy.K got gold medal in the 65 kg. class.
